Nusa Kambangan

Nusa Kambangan is the name of an island in Central Java, which is more known for the several Correctional Institution (LP) berkeamanan high in Indonesia. The island is included in the administrative area of Cilacap Regency and registered in the outer islands of Indonesia. To reach this island people have to cross by ferry from the port in Cilacap for approximately five minutes. Harbor ferry this island named Wijayapura.

Originally there were nine in Nusa Kambangan LP (for the prisoners and political prisoners), but now it is still operating only four, namely Batu Prison (built 1925), LP Iron (built 1929), LP Kembang Kuning (year 1950), and LP Permisan (The oldest, built in 1908). The other five, namely Nirbaya, Middle Reef, Limus Buntu, Karang Anyar, and Gleger has been closed. Areas south of the island facing directly into the Indonesian Ocean with berkarangnya beach and large waves. Cilacap area facing north and surrounded by fishing villages along the mangrove forests, among others, of Kampung Laut and Jojog.

Nusakambangan residents only by the inmates and employees of the LP and their families, under the supervision of the Department of Justice and Local Government Cilacap. And out of this island must have special permission to certain procedures. Children in elementary school officials are available within the island. To continue to the advanced level (junior high, high school, or college), they must attend school in Cilacap, or other cities in Java.

Kambangan Island, having status as a nature reserve, in addition to frequently used for military training, is also a habitat for rare trees, but many have been felled illegally. Currently the remaining are mostly herbaceous plant, palm, and thickets. Pawlar timber that can only be found on the island is often stolen because once dried, has a quality equal to the wood from Borneo.

Traditionally, the successor to the Sultanate of the Mataram dynasty often perform rituals on the island and make it as a "jungle ritual". In the western part of the island, in a cave located in the mangrove forest areas, there is a kind inscription VOC era relic. At the east end, on top of the cliff, stands the lighthouse tower and a small fort Cimiring Portuguese heritage. Various kinds of typical plants grown Javanese cultural rituals here. Nusa Kambangan recorded as the last defense of plants Wijayakusuma true. From this island is where the name originated: Nusa Kembangan, which means "island of flowers".

The main ferry harbor in Port Sodong Nusakambangan is, exclusively for transportation purposes and staff and prisoners' families.
